Municipality of Argao posted a total population of 78,187 persons as of May 1, 2020 National Statistics Office survey, which is 2.35 percent of the Total Population of Cebu (excluding Cebu City, Mandaue city & Lapu-Lapu City) of 3,325,385. This represents an increase of 386,403 persons over the total population of 2,938,982 in 2015. The 2015 figures translated to an annual population growth of 1.55 percent from 2015 to 2020. It is expected that the population will double in 90 years or in 2105.As of 2020, the Municipality of Argao has 77,888 total household populations with an average household size of 4.1. The household population comprises 39,789 males or about 51.09 percent and 38,099 females or 48.92 percent from the total households. According to PSA, the difference in value of two variables (total population and household population) is the reported number of prisoners in Argao District Jail, PWUD patients of DOH-Treatment and Rehabilitation Center Argao, CICL clientele of DSWD-Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth and others.Population density of Argao is 3.77 persons per hectare. The most densely populated barangay and the only urban area is Barangay Poblacion with a population density of 30.50 persons per hectare while the most sparsely is Barangay Mandilikit with a population density of 1.19 persons per hectare.

About 28.85 percent of the total household population belongs to the age group 0-14 years old or child and youth dependent population. Productive population (ages 15-64 years old) comprise 63.24 percent, while 7.91 percent of the household population are elders (above 65 years old). The total dependency ratio of the municipality is 58.13 percent which means that for every 100 person’s ages 15-64 years old, 58 young dependents and 49 old dependents. There was a spurt of urbanization that happened in 2000 for Barangay Poblacion. The level of urbanization in the latest censal year is 7.71% which means that roughly 8% lives in the urban area. However, decrease in the tempo of urbanization were noted between 2010 and 2015 because of the installation of water and power services in the rural areas and decompressing urbanity is some coastal areas like in Barangays of Taloot and Talaga. The event led to decongest the central business district and made way for urban folks to reside in rural areas, causing the rural growth rate to rise over the years.With an annual growth rate of 1.55% which is relatively lower than the national growth rate, nevertheless the population of the Municipality of Argao is projected to reach 94,006 in 2032 from 80,626 in 2022. Barangay Poblacion will still have the greatest number of people, while Barangay Lapay will have the lowest population count. With the young population of the municipality, the momentum of population growth is expected to translate in continuing population growth in the coming years, hence, family planning must be emphasized together with other health services in public health facilities. In addition, local initiatives shall look into the municipality’s land use aspects. The proposed land use plan should be strategically assessed and emphasized to the more populated barangay and proposed potential growth areas for urban expansions.
